The great American gold rush began in 1849, followed by a random discovery of gold by a Swiss miller named John Sutter in 1848 in California. This caused a high scale migration of men, girls, and kids from all around the world. This migration, which was to search gold, is mostly named as the ‘gold rush’. A wave of emigres braved miseries, Sickness , problems, and infrequently even death in their search to find gold. All such emigres are referred to as the forty-niners. California is the 4th largest state in the States.

California is lies on the west coast of the US, and was previously part of Mexico. The gold deposits were generally borne by the brooks in California. The people living in and around California were the 1st ones to use this literally wonderful opportunity, and made quick cash. Slowly and continuously, the world witnessed a worldwide migration towards the wild, Wild West! Folks migrated from east America, South America, Europe and even Asia. About ninety thousand folks migrated to California, in 1849 alone! The figure carried on increasing exponentially, and this global migration set to switch the face and destiny of the U. S. of America. The gold rush changed the dynamics of this place so significantly the otherwise little and unknown city of San Francisco turned into a prospering center of business, a town with limitless opportunities of trade. Today, San Francisco is the 4th most populous town in California, and contributes 13% of the total GDP expansion of the country. The anarchic state of California headed towards an incredible legally administered area after going thru cultural and ethnic chaos, for ages.

This huge migration posed difficulties not only for the emigres, but also for the host country. The greediness for gold by the forceful ones led them to practice great racial discrimination particularly towards the Chinese, and the Asians.
